About this giving

What is Sadaqah al-Fitr (Fitra)?

Sadaqah al-Fitr — commonly called Fitra — is an obligatory charity paid at the end of Ramadan by every self-supporting Muslim, on behalf of themselves and their dependants, including children. It is due before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer.

Its purpose is twofold: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan, and to make sure the poor also have enough to eat and celebrate on the day of Eid. It is traditionally measured as a staple food (about 2.5–3 kg of wheat, flour or rice) or its cash value per person.

Who your gift helps

Your Fitra reaches poor families in Kashmir as food or its value before Eid, so that they too can wake up to a table that is full on the morning of the festival.

  2. 2We convert and distribute it as food or its value to needy families before the Eid prayer.
  3. 3Distribution is completed in time for Eid, with nothing deducted from your Fitra.

Questions & Answers

Sadaqah al-Fitr (Fitra) — your questions answered

When must Fitra be paid?
Fitra must be paid before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer for it to count as Sadaqah al-Fitr. It can be given during the last days of Ramadan so that it reaches the poor in time. If paid after the Eid prayer, it counts as ordinary charity rather than Fitra.
Who do I pay Fitra for?
The head of a household pays Fitra on behalf of themselves and every dependant, including children and, by many opinions, an unborn or newborn child. You give one measure per person.
How much is Fitra?
Fitra is one measure (roughly 2.5–3 kg) of a staple food such as wheat, flour or rice per person, or its cash equivalent. Give what corresponds to the number of people in your household.
