The third pillar

What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on the wealth a Muslim has held for one lunar year above a minimum threshold called the Nisab. It is not a donation of goodwill but a right the poor hold over the wealth of those who have enough. By purifying wealth and redistributing it to those in need, Zakat keeps money moving through the community rather than concentrating in a few hands.

Paid correctly, Zakat can lift a family out of crisis in a single year — clearing a debt, funding a treatment, or restoring a livelihood. At Imdaad Foundation we have been collecting and delivering Zakat to eligible families across Kashmir since 1977, with every rupee verified and accounted for.

Not sure how much you owe?

Zakat is due at 2.5% on your net Zakatable wealth — cash, gold, silver, savings and business assets — once it exceeds the Nisab and has been held for a lunar year. Our calculator applies the current Nisab and does the maths for you.

Questions & Answers

Zakat questions, answered

What is the Nisab and how do I know if I have to pay Zakat?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold, above their basic needs, before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is set at the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. If your net Zakatable wealth stays at or above the Nisab for one lunar year, Zakat is due at 2.5%.
How much Zakat do I pay?
The standard rate is 2.5% of your net Zakatable wealth held for one lunar year — cash, gold, silver, savings, business stock and receivables, minus immediate liabilities. You can work out your exact figure with our Zakat Calculator.
Who can receive my Zakat?
Zakat may only be given to the eight categories of recipients named in the Qur'an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60): the poor, the needy, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing the enslaved, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.
Does 100% of my Zakat reach the poor?
Yes. Imdaad Foundation operates a 100% Zakat policy — every rupee of Zakat you give is delivered to eligible recipients. Our operating costs are met separately, so no part of your Zakat is spent on overheads.
How does Imdaad verify that recipients are genuinely eligible?
Every case is verified on the ground by our volunteers and committee in Kashmir before any Zakat is disbursed. We assess income, dependants, liabilities and need on a case-by-case basis, so your Zakat reaches people who truly qualify under the eight categories.
